Before going to college, I just liked to eat.
As soon as I moved out of my mom's house and started cooking for myself, I decided that I loved it too much to just do it for survival purposes. Even so, I ate my way through college, earned a nice computer engineering degree and moved to a place far, far away to do something slightly unrelated.
None of it involved cooking.
I still enjoy cooking enough to do it every day. The fact that I would die of starvation if I didn't is not what compels me to cook: I could still buy prepared food; but what I like is to make new things with the ingredients I already have... and see what comes out.
I also like to travel.
I don't travel as much as I would like to, but since I started working I decided that my main monetary goal was to make enough money to go to at least two new places every single year. Finally, it's starting to happen.
As much fun as it is too cook and travel, I realized that it was all about me. I cook the food that I like and eat it. I go to the places I want and enjoy them, then go on with my life. But what about other people? I'm fortunate enough that I can go to places and eat good stuff, but since not everyone has the means or the inclination to do so, I decided to share all about it. Hence this website.
For the food posts, I don't really follow specific recipes. I just eyeball it as best as I can and guesstimate the measurements and times based on what I remember. Really, if you expect me to write and cook at the same time, you have no idea what a laptop would look like after frying plantains next to it, so I cook, take pictures, eat and enjoy, then I start thinking about what to write. By that time I probably need a cup of coffee to avoid falling into an involuntary afternoon nap.
For the travel posts, I just write whatever comes out based on my feelings at the moment of the writing. The posts may vary in mood, length, and verbosity. It is, at best, an experiment on how to share my experiences without it becoming a travel guide. Also, since I'm most likely at a place I've never been to before, I don't pretend to waste precious time writing while I could be out actually experiencing the place.
You've been warned.
Enjoy ;)
